9th Annual Back to School Picnic

This Saturday, August 15th, I will be hosting the 9th Annual Back to School Picnic in Washington Park (400-600 E. 60th Street). This marks 9 years of supporting our children and ensuring they're well-prepared to begin the new school year with the new book bags and school supplies I distribute to 20th Ward students at the picnic.
I invite you to join more than 1,000 of your neighbors on Saturday at Washington Park to celebrate the end of summer and the children's return to school. There will be live entertainment, dance presentations, music, and community prayers for the safety and well-being of our kids. Picnic-goers will also enjoy free food and drinks. We will have bouncy houses, clown activities and comedy, face-painting, karate lessons, fishing lessons, horse and pony rides, track races, and many other fun activities for children. This year, we will also be spotlighting local businesses, agencies and professionals in an effort to encourage attendees to support local businesses and to employ local residents.
In addition to children's activities, the picnic also provides parents with access to much-needed resources. This year we will again be hosting over 20 community partners and organizations for our Resource Fair at the picnic. St. Bernard's mobile clinic will be on site to conduct physicals and offer vaccinations and lead testing for school-aged children. The Heart that Smiles Mobile Dentists will be on site for dental screenings, cleanings, and fluoride treatments. Representatives from the Department of Family and Support Services and Metropolitan Family Services' Learning and Wellness Center will be on site recruiting for Head Start and their early childhood programs, and much more!
I sincerely hope to see you at Washington Park this Saturday from 10 AM - 4 PM! The picnic is our biggest event of the year and I hope you will be a part of it. Let's build community and join together on this common goal: promoting the educational success of our children and ensuring that our kids are off to a great start for the new school year!
