City's Roof and Porch Program

Two weekends ago, I celebrated our 9th Annual Back to School Picnic at Washington Park with hundreds of families from all corners of our Ward. We had a wonderful turn out and we were able to offer many services and goods because of our strong partnerships with local organizations and businesses. We received numerous in-kind donations of food, drinks, snacks, fruits, and more from vendors like the University of Illinois, Chicago Community Colleges, Retailers, and The South East Chicago Commission.  It was a wonderful sight to see our youth enjoying the bounce houses, face painting, and making new friends! The horseback rides were also a huge hit, and the children (and even adults) enjoyed an experience typically not available in the 20th ward.
While we were just out in the park celebrating with our families, the recent dip in overnight temperatures makes it hard to ignore that autumn is almost upon us. With that in mind, it's important to start planning and preparing for Chicago's cold winters.
I want to share with you the City of Chicago's Roof, Porch, and Emergency Heating Programs available to assist with emergency home repairs. The Roof and Porch Repair Program and the Emergency Heating Repair program help homeowners make improvements to their homes via grants that do not have to be repaid. When unexpected repairs are needed, it can be challenging for homeowners to pay for new boilers, roofs, and/or porches to their property. I believe in homeownership and investing and maintaining your properties, and I strongly encourage you to make use of this city program to help pay for these costly repairs.
Roof and Porch Repair Program
Open enrollment for the 2016 Roof and Porch Repair program will take place on

Emergency Heating Repair Program
Open enrollment for the Emergency Heating Repair Program runs from Nov.1 thru April 1. To initiate the application process, homeowners can call DPD's customer service line at 312.744.3653 or visit City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St., Room 1006, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday thru Friday.
Eligible properties must be located in Chicago, habitable, owner-occupied, and not at risk of foreclosure.  All applicants must be income eligible and can only receive a one-time service for roof and porch repair/replacement.  Exception to the one-time assistance policy may be granted to homeowners who face heating emergencies even though they already have received roof or porch assistance.
Households earning 80% or less of the Area Median Income (AMI).  are eligible to participate in the program. The total gross income of all owners and other household members shall be included and may not exceed this limit.  The gross incomes of all adults, 18 and older, who reside in the property, are included to determine income eligibility. If the owner sells, transfers title or no longer occupies the unit within one year of the grant, the owner will be required to pay back the grant in its entirety.
